This is way of a notice, to those who have not already heard, that we lost two outstanding botanical artists at the turn of the year.
I'm doing a brief biography/appreciation of Margaret Stones today (see below) I'm also in the process of constructing a web page for Margaret Stones for my section about Famous and/or Notable Botanical Artists in the 20th Century - chronicling her artwork and significant contribution to botanical illustration and will be highlighting this at a later date Tomorrow I have a post about Jessica Tcherepnine. Margaret Stones AM OBE GM (1920-2018)

We are sorry to hear of the passing of Margaret Stones on 26 December, a prolific illustrator for Curtis's Botanical Magazine and other publications between 1951 and 2002, when she returned to her native Australia (photo courtesy of Marilyn Ward) #botanicalart #sciart pic.twitter.com/Bqj5GaXikt

Very well researched article on (Elsie) Margaret Stones. Her innate talent was remarkable, such style and grace in her drawings as well as them being scientifically accurate. Margaret has left the world an incredible legacy, the standard and her output was quite amazing.
I’m so proud of my aunt Margaret, we have had some wonderful times together, both in the UK and home here in Australia. I will miss my weekly visit; I would shop for her, then we would have coffee and a chat, Margaret would talk about her career and the funny times we shared together, but was equally keen to talk politics and current world events. An enquiring mind until the end.
Many thanks for your comment Elaine. I've heard a lot of people talk warmly about your aunt since the news of her passing. It's wonderful to hear that she how she was in her last few years.
I am the niece of Miss Ethel Coleman. When your aunt went to London in 1951 she went to my aunt's house and stayed there until she returned to Australia towards the end of her life. My husband and I visited Margaret in Hawthorn. She made us very welcome and it was lovely to see her so well settled. I am pleased to hear that she was still alert to the end of her amazing life.
Reflecting on the fact of her time with Tb her recovery was amazing. Not many years before she would almost certainly have died young. Before it was treatable the world must have lost much talent in many fields of art and industry.
Although I didn't keep in touch with her regularly I still have one of her letters - written when our 20yr old xon died. He had met her and we went to the exhibition of the Louisina Flora at the Fitzwilliam.
I also had Tb and was being treated when Margaret arrived in Kew. Eventually she bought my aunt's house from my sister and I so she never moved from the [lace she stayed in when she arrived in London. I can understand that you miss her but be thankful you had her with you for so long. Kind regards Maureen Lahiff
Hello, I have come across the fact that Margaret Stones gifted an etching by June Dobai in 1992 to the National Gallery of Victoria. It was called Striped Rock (1991) by June Dobai. It is not on display but there is an online link to it https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/explore/collection/work/34767/
I wondered if you had any information about how Margaret was connected to June Dobai and June's work?
Thank you for this beautifully worded biography of such a prolific and talented Australian botanical artist. A true inspiration!
My husband acquired a watercolour of Lagunaria Patersonii subtitled Cow Itch Tree signed E Margaret Stones under the drawing. His aunt owned it and after her death in 2011, he received it as part of the estate. Do you have details of when it was painted?
I have two paintings by Margaret Stones in case anyone is creating a catalogue of her works. My mother was a friend of hers.
Thank you for letting "us" know. It would be wonderful to have the details of the works you own.
I too have a Margaret Stones painting. It's of pink heath and was bought by my aunt Violet Fairhall at Margaret's first exhibition. Auntie Vi worked in the office at Epworth for most of her working life. She became friendly with Margaret when she was in hospital and was one of those who brought her flowers to paint. She also went shopping for art materials for Margaret.
