The Bermuda Society of Botanical Artists (BSBA) has a brand NEW website - as in their very first website! Formed in January 2016, this is a relatively new botanical art society. It's new website can be found at https://bermudasba.org and it looks to me like they're off to a very good start in the online world! The Christmas Exhibition of the Edinburgh Society of Botanical Artists will open tomorrow at The John Hope Gateway at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh (entrance via Arboretum Place). The exhibition runs from 25th November - 2nd December (10am - 4pm) and admission is free - and the art will be excellent! ESBA acts as an Alumni Association for past graduates of the RBGE Diploma Course in Botanical Illustration. Below I've got images of some of the pen and ink drawings that Marianne Hazlewoodwill be showing. Marianne was the winner of the Eve Bennett Award for Botanical Illustration at this summer's Diploma graduation.  The drawings below were done by Marianne Hazlewood using Japanese ink paste on Lambeth Cartridge. The images are 'crops'. I think they're wonderful because they lend a distinctively contemporary 'edge' to her botanical art. Marianne was inspired in her pen and ink drawings by Sarah Simblet (author of Botany for the Artist) who came to the Diploma course and did a day with the students.  © Marianne Hazlewood While I was painting my Arisaema I wanted to illustrate these growing shoots because they were so fascinating, so I did a drawing for each of my specimens, it was such an amazing experience, one which I will be repeating  © Marianne Hazlewood The botanical artists with drawings, paintings and prints on display include:

This post is about the "British Artists in the Shirley Sherwood Collection" exhibition at The Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art at Kew Gardens  Dr Shirley Sherwood speaking at the Private View for the opening of 'British Artists in the Shirley Sherwood Collection' exhibition at Kew Gardens When I wrote my catalogue-like blog post - , Shirley Sherwood was out of the country. When she returned to the UK, she invited me to visit her because she had a number of comments she wanted to make on the content. It was a pleasure to visit Shirley twice to review this rather long blog post and clarify matters where I'd guessed and listen to stories about an artist or how a painting was bought. We're both very keen on:
IMPORTANTLY - and for the very first time - this blog post now lists the number of paintings by each artist in the collection. I've also updated it with the comments she asked me to include and I've also added in some additional images. I was absolutely amazed - as I am sure you will be - by how many paintings by leading British botanical artists she now owns! My next job is another catalogue-like blog post about the current exhibition Abundance: Seeds, Pods and Autumn Fruits from the Shirley Sherwood Collection - complete with pics of some of the paintings and some of the artists. He was totally absorbed by his own work and growing his plants so he could paint them
Raymond Booth died in July 2015. At the time I don't think I'd appreciated quite how "collectable" he was - or how unique his approach to botanical art was. About Raymond Booth is a new page in the 20th century Botanical Artists section of my website. he joins the other pages about: The Fine Art Society represented him for over 50 years prior to his death and he had eight solo exhibitions in his lifetime and three since - and I'm only kicking myself that I didn't realise that two of them were held this year! For those starting out, it's well worth while taking a look at his work:
There's a wonderful comment by Shirley in her entry about him in 'Contemporary Botanical Artists' to the effect that she was very surprised that she was queuing on a chilly pavement at 7.30am in the morning - and was 16th in the queue to get in and buy a painting! Note: This page came about because I met up with Shirley Sherwood to discuss my blog post about the British Botanical Artists exhibition and I was updating that post as a result of her very helpful comments when I got to Raymond - and it occurred to me to create a page for him - as an exemplar of the notion that not all botanical art needs to be watercolour!

We can certainly expect to see announcements about the current and upcoming exhibitions at The Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanic Art at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
Given Dr Sherwood has always been a big supporter of the artists as well as the art I think we can also expect to hear news about the artists who have work in the collection. Plus I have my fingers crossed and hope we might also get to see any new botanical artwork that is being added to the collection. This is a collection which now amounts to very nearly 1,000 artworks collected in the last 25+ years. The "Learn More" button at the tope of the page takes you straight to the Gallery's page on the Kew website.
The awards presented at the 20th International Exhibition of Botanical Art, organised by the American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA) and the Hortifcultural Society of New York, are listed below.
