Facebook Groups for Botanical Artists

Facebook has become a wonderful forum for co-operative and collaborative endeavour - and a place to meet like-minded people.
THREE essential things you need to know:

You can only join a group as an individual - using your real name. The admins of Facebook Pages cannot be members of a group. They can however be a member in their own right as an individual.

You must make sure you understand the rules. Read the narrative about what the group is about and make sure you stick to the rules. Otherwise you might find yourself having a chat with the Administrator or banned from the group!  If in doubt about what is and is not OK, it's always a good idea to ask first.
There are a number of different types of groups.
  • Some have been going for some time while others are relatively new - and still growing.
  • Some cater for everybody. Others have very specific niche interests.
  • Some are geographically specific while others welcome international members.
  • Some are associated with students of very specific courses of instruction (i.e. access is governed by whether or not you have paid the fees for the course)
Want to start a Facebook Group?
You also need to understand the status of different groups:
  • Public = Anyone can join or be added or invited by a member, see what is posted and see who is a member.
  • Private = Membership is NOT open to anybody. These used to be called
    • Closed = Anyone can ask to join or be added or invited by a member. Only current members can see what is posted.
    • Secret = People can only be added or invited by a member. Only current members can see who is a member and what is posted.

Facebook Groups for Botanical Artists

PLEASE NOTE: I do NOT include those groups where:
  • "about botanical art and illustration" apparently includes any image with a flower; and/or
  • where the Moderator allows plagiarised images
  • provide reference photos only.
  • i.e. if it's not in my list below then it's one of the above!!

Botanical Art Facebook Groups that only exist on Facebook

Major Facebook Groups

The most popular group by a very long way is Botanical Artists (PRIVATE/CLOSED | 11,700+ members)
This is a closed and very focused group. This means
  • the images are not on view to the general public
  • admission to membership is moderated.
  • It has very strict moderation on what can be posted so read the rules carefully.
  • It's also a very effective and friendly group for those with a serious interest in botanical art.

Another very popular Group is Botanical Art for Beginners (PRIVATE/CLOSED | 19,600+ members)
  • for beginners in botanical art who wish to learn together through books and other means. This is NOT a teaching group.
  • inflated numbers probably reflect those who join on a whim and pass on.

Botanical Art For Coloured Pencil (PRIVATE/CLOSED | 2,490+ members)
  • dedicated to those using coloured pencils ONLY.

Scientific Botanical Illustrations (PRIVATE/CLOSED | 1,670 members)
  • This group is only for Botanical Illustrations which are scientifically accurate. Scientifically accurate refers to what we are aiming at, not necessarily what we are achieving!
  • No flower painting will be tolerated.
  • Beginners are very welcome.

Other Facebook Groups which purport to be related to Botanical Illustration but in fact have a VERY loose definition of the artwork which can be included under this term and hence are not included on this page. I'm also very much not a fan of those who post artwork which is not their own without acknowledging the source.

Other smaller Facebook Groups - often with geographical and/or educational/instruction focus

Some are restricted to those living in particular locations while others are more flexible:

  • Botanical Art Students (115 members) - PRIVATE Group - Only for students, past and present, of the Society of Botanical Artist's Distance Learning Diploma, this group was formed as a friendly place to share art, ask questions, and form friendships around the world.

Facebook Pages for Botanical Art Societies & Groups

Picture
American Society of Botanical Artists - Facebook Page Banner (early 2016) - Note that banner images and banner styles change all the time so you need to know what the Facebook Pages are called and what their URL is
In the last 2-3 years I've seen a lot of new Pages on Facebook which belong to the formal organisations of botanical artists and illustrators around the world. They are generally well worth following if you're a botanical art enthusiast.
  • They tend to focus on and highlight their exhibitions and the activities of their members - including workshops and classes.
  • They often highlight other activities or events that their members might be interested in.

The list also includes Facebook Pages specifically created for juried open botanical art exhibitions.

Notes for those wanting to develop a Facebook Page

Facebook can be a great aid to communication, networking and marketing art - if you play by the rules!
  • Back in 2012 I wrote this post Artists on Facebook - The Scope and The Rules which explains the different ways that artists can operate on Facebook
  • Marketing and communication - how best to use Facebook Pages in 2015
  • Change in Facebook Pages Rules will affect artists marketing their art (2014) - This is a RECOMMENDED READ for all those who have a Facebook Page and use it to market their art and/or exhibitions.
Every artist promoting their business or products on Facebook needs to have a long hard think about whether and what they need to change to conform with the new rules for Facebook Pages being introduced.
