Every year I visit the Annual Exhibition of the Society of Botanical Artists at Central Hall, Westminster in London.
I then write up a comprehensive review of what is on display - with images of artwork - and which botanical artists have been awarded the prizes and Certificates of Botanical Merit (with links to websites where available). |

I don't see the Society of Botanical Artists leaving the Mall Galleries anytime soon. I think they've found their new "forever" home! |
2017 - Changing Seasons
This was the last annual exhibition at Westminster Central Hall. 467 paintings, drawings and prints, Miniatures and works in three dimensions (glass, sculpture, jewellery) by members and associated members of the SBA and artwork from non-members selected from the open entry |
International artists seemed to have submitted more work than usual. I've no idea what the numbers are - that's just a gut reaction on my part. This might because the DLDC is seeing more and more international students each year - who then go on to become Associate and full Members of SBA |
2016 - Shape, Pattern, Structure
|
I found I had a lot of difficulty this year in recognising people's work (unless they were doing 'more of the same'). It seems that the theme of 'Shape, Pattern and Structure' really made some people think and they tried drawing and painting new (for them) plants and flowers. Personally I enjoyed people flexing their artistic muscles and doing new things.
I think the thing most worth commenting on is the improvement in the standard of the student work. The work of students in their final year of the Distance Learning Diploma Course is, as always, exhibited in a corner of the exhibition....Every year I've seen some stunning work alongside work which appeared very promising. This year I was amazed to find a display which is truly outstanding in the breadth and depth of the quality of the work.
2014 - The Botanical Garden
|
Each year, I go to the Annual Exhibition of the Society of Botanical Artists and, in addition to very healthy sales of artwork I always see a very busy 'shop' area where people hand over wads of money for cards, prints and books by members or by the society - plus art materials associated with named artists.
2013 - The Language of Flowers
This was the year the annual exhibition by the SBA was "back to back" with the RHS Botanical Art Show at the nearby RHS Lindley Hall - and people could visit both.

2010 - The Silver Jubilee (16 to 25 April 2010)
746 botanical works including miniatures and three-dimensional work
|
2009 - Flowers and Gardens
|
the SBA Annual Exhibition is currently providing the largest display of coloured pencil artwork in the UK in the last 12 months .....24 artists are displaying a total of 73 artworks (in coloured pencils). |
2008 - the Botanical Palette (April 2008)
This year, the Society is celebrating the publication of its second book and its title is reflected in the title of the exhibition. This year the exhibition starts with a special section reflecting the colour palette of botanical painters. Part of this section of the exhibition is shown on the back wall of the photo at the top of this post. Examples of botanical art have then been hung to reflect the colour spectrum beginning with pure white and moving through all the colours in sequence right through to black. |
2007 -Flowers and Gardens (April 2007)
728 drawings and paintings, 11 Miniatures, and 26 sculptures | Hall on the Ground Floor of Central Hall Westminster The annual Flowers and Gardens exhibition by the Society of Botanical Artists at Central Hall Westminster maintained its very high standard this year and reflected the Society's willingness to include a wide variety of approaches and media for the representation of botanical art including fruit, vegetables and fungi as well as flowers and gardens. |
2006 Celebration of the English Garden (April 2006)
743 drawings and paintings, 14 Miniatures and 18 sculptures | Hall on the Ground Floor of Central Hall Westminster I visited the Society of Botanical Artists exhibition yesterday and was totally blown away by the very fine quality of most of the artwork shown. There are some very impressive and accomplished artists exhibiting with the SBA - including a number of coloured pencil artists. |
