Botanical Illustration is a genre of art that endeavours to faithfully depict and represent the form, colour and detail of a plant, identifiable to species or cultivar level. The best botanical illustration successfully combines scientific accuracy with visual appeal. It must portray a plant with the precision and level of detail for it to be recognised and distinguished from another species.

TIPS for botanical artists re. entering OPEN exhibitions

BELOW are links to articles I've written in the past about things artists need to consider when entering an open exhibition or art competition.

If you're considering entering an open exhibition
  • EXPENSES: How to calculate the cost of entering a juried art exhibition - it's so exciting creating work for an art competition and hitting all your deadlines. So much so that artists often forget to look at the options and costs of getting their artwork to a competition - and back again if unsold. You can download my free spreadsheet if you need a checklist of what to think about and how to cost out how much an entry actually costs - see A Making A Mark Guide: Analysing the cost of entering a juried art exhibition
  • VAT: VAT for non-UK artists and UK exhibition organisers relates to the changes in the VAT rules for INTERNATIONAL artists wanting to enter UK open exhibitions and art competitions but living outside the UK
  • WEBSITES: The Websites of Contemporary Painters in the UK - to maximise the benefit of being selected you really need get your website sorted BEFORE you enter a juried art competition or miss out on the traffic when the names of selected artists are announced! (This was written back in 2010! It needs updating - but you might like to reflect on what I was saying then about websites!)

Framing
  • Framing for art competitions and open exhibitions - this page on my Art Business Info website provides lots of tips and useful links about:
    • how a frame can help your work get selected
    • how to avoid elimination - due to framing
  • This is my list of recommended picture framers - please let me know if you'd like to add yours to my list

Shipping
  • This is my page about how to ship art to exhibitions. You might also find the following useful:
    • How to wrap and pack artwork for shipping if you are using post or a courier
    • My advice about packaging materials - for internal and external packing - to avoid artwork being damaged
  • The most popular page on my Art Business Info for Artists website - by a long way - is my page about International Art Shipping:How to ship / export art to other countries - If you want to ship art from your country to another but don't know what an EORI number is or what the Customs tariff code is for art you need to read this page!

What stage are you at?
  • Pre-selected, selected, long listed, shortlisted, prizewinner - what's in a phrase? - I regularly come across artists who use the wrong terminology to describe the stage they've reached - so here's a short explanation.

You're selected - now what?
You need to tell people generally and also tell those you are trying to get your work in front of e.g. art galleries.
  • How to write a press release for an artist or exhibition helps you get your name in your local paper and other journals and/or websites which might be interested.
  • How to create a Private View Invitation that works! is about making sure that your invitation to the Private View gets read
