Auction of Vicki Matthews Collection of Botanical Art

Vicki Matthews is a distinguished British botanist, writer and botanical art collector. Tomorrow her collection of botanical art will be auctioned to benefit Vicki in her care home.

Vicki Matthews was

the Andrew Carnegie research associate University Edinburgh, 1966-1974;
curator herbarium of cultivated plants Royal Botanical Garden, Edinburgh, 1974-1986;
editor The Kew Magazine, 1986-1993;
editor The New Plantsman, Royal Horticultural Society, London, 1993-1995;
international clematis registrar, from 1995.

She was married to another botanist, Robert Brinsley Burbidge, and together they worked at the Fairchild Tropical Garden and Denver Botanic Garden.

She is also a member of the Linnean Society London and her published books include

Lilies (1989),
Contemporary Botanical Artists (1996) and
Gardening with Climbers (1997).

The Vicki Matthews Collection of Botanical Art covers lots 116-147 of the catalogue.
which includes:

a hand-coloured engraved plate by Georg Ehret
a watercolour by Mary Grierson (1912-2012) - one of the botanical illustrators at Kew
an etching and aquatint by Rory McEwen
a pair of colour printed aquatints by Rory McEwen
a painting of cowslips by Kathy Pickles

4th ASBA Online Botanical Art Auction now live

The Fourth ASBA Annual Online Botanical Art Auction is now live to the public and will continue until 11:00 PM EDT on the 27th April 2018

Members of the American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA) have generously donated a stunning collection of both original botanical art, prints, places in botanical art workshops, critiques and books.

You can see four examples of the artwork above, plus you can view the works, workshops, critiques, prints and books up for auction here.

You also get to monitor how the bids are progressing relative to their value - and which works are attracting the most interest!

Of course bidders should remember that there's nothing to stop you bidding beyond the advertised value of the item if it's something you particularly want!

Some items have already reached their value - but could be exceeded.

support ASBA's mission - to provide a thriving, interactive community dedicated to perpetuating the tradition and contemporary practice of botanical art.
benefit artists who sell original work

About the ASBA 4th Online Auction of Botanical Art

The auction is hosted by biddingforgood.com. I'm not familiar with the auction site, but I understand from the ASBA that Bidding For Good(B4G)* is a safe and trusted online auction administrator, used and recommended by nonprofits across the country.

This page on the ASBA website tells you what you need to do in order to bid on a work, Basically you need to:

register to big on the BiddingforGood website - which includes providing your address and credit card information
complete your bid on the item of your choice by typing your bid in the MyBid box and clicking to confirm the bid

UPDATE: I apparently misunderstood how the bidding system works when I first wrote this post. I have to say I find the bidding system confusing as it appears that

what is referenced as the "leading bid" might not be a bid at all! (huh?)
there are items listed as "no bid" which appear to have had a bid (huh?) - which I really don't understand and cannot find an explanation of.

I've no connection with the auction so if you have any problems or queries I suggest you contact either the biddingforgood site (which has a support section) or the ASBA for an explanation.

The Magnificent Botanical Library of D. F. Allen

For fans of botanical art history - I am pleased to present a wonderful opportunity for some leisurely browsing on a Sunday morning!

Sotheby's have an upcoming auction of the Botanical Library of D. F. Allen in New York. Prior to the auction they are showcasing three centuries of the finest illustrated botanical books in their auction house and online (via the catalogue and lots) prior to the auction on Thursday next week.
