Leaves - observations in watercolour by Julia Trickey (self-published) Who better to write a book about creating botanical watercolour paintings of leaves than a botanical artist and tutor who has won not one but TWO RHS Gold Medals for her paintings of leaves?
Julia Trickey has been a botanical artist for the last 20 years and for much of that time she has also been a tutor delivering regular classes near bath, workshops, demonstrations and distance based tuition via publications, videos and her new online website. She has recently created a small manual about painting leaves called "Leaves - observations in watercolour". The bulk of the book covers various techniques - illustrated by specific leaves. The title page describes it as being "a gallery of leaf portraits together with notes on why and how they are painted" For each double page spread - one page is devoted to a painting of a leaf while the facing page provides the notes relating to how it was painted. This is emphatically not a step by step book - the instruction comes in the notes - and in an overview of the basics for painting leaves at the end. Julia provides precise and cogent instructions of how to achieve specific painting effects required for different types of leaves. Her instructions cover the perfect and the less than perfect leaves encountered in the UK. The bias is towards her favourite painting technique of wet in wet - however she also covers the other techniques required for specific effects either before or after a wet in wet wash has been applied/ The range of effects / techniques and leaves include:
At the end it has a summaries about:
In summary, I've always wondered why there is no really great instruction book for botanical artists about how to paint leaves. While this is not that book. I think this one goes a long way to fulfilling the needs of those who have trouble painting leaves. It is
This is a small paperback which has been well produced and has good quality colours. It measures roughly 5.5 inches square and has 58 pages of content. It costs £8 plus p&p and is available from Julia Trickey EITHER at her stand at the RHS Botanical Art Fair 2018 OR orders can be placed via the resources page on her website.
