The Botanical Artists Group on Facebook celebrates its 10th Birthday this month.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND membership to all practising botanical artists on Facebook. It's very informative and helpful plus well regarded group.

This month marks the 10th anniversary of the Botanical Artists group, which was created by Sigrid. Although we did have a small group prior to that date as some of you will recall. Now we are all much older and wiser? (of course) and it's a huge group with over 12k members, which is testament to the continued popularity of botanical art and illustration.

I'm posting to say thanks to Sigrid and all who have contributed to the group over the years. The group kind of runs itself due to the input from you all. It has been a great way of making contact with other artists around the globe and for sharing the love for botanical art.

it now has 12,200+ members
- most of whom are practising botanical artists
- they include numerous professional and semi-professional botanical artists - including many who are leading artists who are known internationally.

PURPOSE

GROUP DESCRIPTION: This group is about Botanical Art and illustration. It was established to bring together botanical artists to support and inspire each other by providing a forum for discussion, sharing work, practice and for the appreciation of the art form. A botanical artist combines scientific accuracy with aesthetically pleasing depictions of plants, so, it's not just about painting flowers but about botanical art in the wider context as an art form.

The comments by existing members are a tribute to the help and support that members have had from fellow members in their quest to develop their botanical art.

WHO CAN BE A MEMBER

WHO IS THIS GROUP FOR: Botanical Artists are welcome here and also people who have an appreciation for botanical art. Artists of all levels are welcome. Note: There is a Botanical Art for Beginners Group so if you are just starting out and this might be appropriate for you too.

Everybody is welcome - who sticks to the rules.

NEW: Shirley Sherwood video profiles the paintings in her botanical art collection

Yesterday I was really pleased to see that Shirley Sherwood has started a NEW project to talk about the botanical paintings in her collection - on video!

You can find the video on her Facebook Page The Shirley Sherwood Collection.

Below is the very first video where Shirley is talking about the Chinese Elm Bonsai painted by Jeannetta Van Raalte. (The link is to the page about the painting on the new website for the Shirley Sherwood Collection and this is the link to the page profiling Jeanetta Van Raalte)

It's just like being with her in the Shirley Sherwood Gallery at Kew when she is doing one of her tours about the new exhibition and is talking about individual paintings. What's great is that she combines:

appreciation and knowledge about the plant
stories about the individual painting and/or plant
explanations about why she particularly likes the painting

Here's how it all came about.

Shirley Sherwood has been in lockdown in her Oxfordshire home for 6 weeks so the family have started a project to keep her busy ?
We're going to video her telling stories about all 1,020 paintings in the Shirley Sherwood Collection so it's going to take quite a while! The stories will be posted to this page, one day at a time, and will be going on the Shirley Sherwood Collection website alongside the description of each painting.

What you need to do to see the videos

This is a wonderful opportunity to hear a VERY knowledgeable botanical art collector talk about her botanical paintings and what made them collectable! You may learn a lot!

In order to view the videos you should:
EITHER

BOOKMARK The Shirley Sherwood Collection Facebook page - which is a public page and you can see whether or not you are a member of Facebook
Like and follow the page if you are a member of Facebook.
Leave a comment - The way Facebook works is that liking/following does not seem to be enough to generate am alert in your new feed. However if you check in every day AND LEAVE A COMMENT, this should then mean that you'll get alerted when a new video appears! :)

Take a look at the Facebook Page every so often - and have a BOTANICAL ART BINGE FEST of videos about the paintings! This too is a good way to consume right now! :)

Indue course - check out my Archive Page about the Shirley Sherwood Exhibitions. I'll be creating something to:
- EITHER link to where the video links are listed on the Collection website - each one is apparently going on the page with the painting
- OR list the artists and paintings on my website and provide a link to the Collection website. BUT I'll probably wait a while to see what materialises as the project gets underway

Botanical Art Worldwide now has a Facebook Page

Yesterday Botanical Art Worldwide launched its NEW Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/botanicalartworldwide/

This is a public page so can be accessed by anybody who is online irrespective of whether they are members of Facebook or not.

It will be a great way of keeping people up to date with how things are progressing in the different countries.
Then come the exhibitions, hopefully we'll see a lot of photos of the exhibitions and the artwork appearing on this page!

If you're already a member of Facebook you can like/follow the page.

The Shirley Sherwood Collection Facebook Page

I am delighted to announce that The Shirley Sherwood Collection now has a Facebook Page - which you can find here https://www.facebook.com/shirleysherwoodcollection/

We can certainly expect to see announcements about the current and upcoming exhibitions at The Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanic Art at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Given Dr Sherwood has always been a big supporter of the artists as well as the art I think we can also expect to hear news about the artists who have work in the collection.

Plus I have my fingers crossed and hope we might also get to see any new botanical artwork that is being added to the collection. This is a collection which now amounts to very nearly 1,000 artworks collected in the last 25+ years.

The "Learn More" button at the tope of the page takes you straight to the Gallery's page on the Kew website.

Two NEW Pages about Botanical Art on Facebook

Today I've published two new Pages on Botanical Art and Artists - covering botanical art societies groups and educators. They are additional to the existing page which will, in future, be wholly focused on botanical artists on Facebook.

I started the day thinking I'd update my website page about botanical artists on Facebook and asked for people to let me know if any have been left out.

However I've been contacted by so many people that I've now decided to split it in three and make each of the three pages much more relevant to the section they sit within.

So Botanical Art and Artists now has:

ARTISTS - Botanical Artists on Facebook. This is the original page and it's lost some of its contents to two new pages. However the bonus is that there will be that it becomes much more focused on the Facebook Pages belonging to artists listed.
GROUPS - Botanical Art Groups on Facebook. This covers the Botanical Art and Florilegium Societies and groups that have Facebook Pages and/or run Groups

EDUCATION - Botanical Art Education on Facebook. The second new page covers the Facebook Pages and Groups run by Botanical Art Schools / Organisations delivering courses and the Pages run by individual Teachers/Tutors.

The brand new Botanical Art and Artists Facebook Page

Two announcements today.

I know a lot of people follow botanical art via social media and the use of Twitter and Facebook enables those who use these to follow more easily.

First I've got a brand new page on the website "About Botanical Art and Artists on Facebook" The aim of this page is to create an index of all those people and organisations that have a Facebook Page. It's not yet finished but it's already got a lot of content.

The second is that I've just created a brand NEW Facebook Page associated with this website. Its URL is https://www.facebook.com/botanicalartandartists and it's called (unsurprisingly) Botanical Art and Artists

This complements the recently created Twitter account (the URL for this is https://twitter.com/botanicartists) and the creation of this blog.

It means that I can share more information online without irritating those who are not interested in botanical art!

I'll continue to write about major events on "Making A Mark (such as the upcoming RHS Botanical Art Show) but lots of information about other exhibitions, events and the activities of societies, groups, courses and artists will now be carried by the social media associated with this website.
