Hooker Botanical Trailblazer and the Botanical Heritage of India
Venue: Botanical Survey of India gallery of the Indian Museum in Kolkata Dates: 1 October 2016 - 1 October 2017 This included facsimiles of some of the studies and correspondence by English botanist and the first director of Kew, Joseph Hooker. Curated by Kew. JD Hooker's second major expedition was to the Himalayas of India, Nepal and Tibet. Here he collected some 7,000 plant specimens over three years, and was imprisoned by the Rajah of Sikkim. Dr Damodaran, director of the Centre for World Environmental History at Sussex, said: “The exhibitions represent for the first time a repatriation of botanical knowledge. There has not been a flora survey of India since Hooker wrote his botany of India in 1871 because they have not had the herbarium specimens he collected. To do the next survey, they need to see what has changed. |
"I have been here three days & again I am out of food... I had not the day a morsel of bread or meat only Tea & a case carrots... We went 2 miles through the densest scrub... rounded another cliff in the bed of the river which was up to our middle & the current very strong... A mile further we could stand out no longer... The rocks & cliffs were impracticable, the snow beds too slippery, & the icy torrents we crossed every few yards bitterly cold... The ground covered with beautiful spring flowers... These explorations are very hard work, but I get such lots of plants that they are always abundantly profitable & I am in rare health." [JDH/1/10/175-179] Joseph Hooker's Indian Christmas

Venue: National Museum of Nature and Science, Tokyo Dates: 12 September – 3 December 2017 First displayed at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (from 17 September 2016 to 5 March 2017), Flora Japonica focused on the unique and special nature of Japanese plants in their natural environment. Exquisite paintings by some of Japan’s leading contemporary artists will be on display, showcasing the natural beauty of plants such as Camellias, Wisteria and the Japanese maple.
Also on display will be a series of beautiful illustrations of Japanese plants from Curtis’s Botanical Magazine from Kew’s extensive Library, Art & Archive collections. Kew’s resident botanical artist, Masumi Yamanaka’s astoundingly detailed painting – Miracle Pine – will also be on display. A particularly poignant work, this painting depicts the lone miracle pine which became a symbol of hope in Japan as the only surviving tree out of 70,000 in the town of Rikuzentakata after the devastating tsunami hit Japan on 11th March 2011. First presented to the then Japanese Ambassador, Mr Keiichi Hayashi, at the Japanese Embassy in London (8 March 2016), this gesture marked the five year anniversary of the Tohoku earthquake and the lasting relationship between Kew Gardens and Japan.
