tips, techniques, tutors and tuition
around the world

Learn about how to create or improve botanical art and illustration

Learn more about how to create your botanical art and illustrations
This page summarises what's on offer to you
- in terms of:
(1) self directed learning or (2) more formal
instruction.
Links to other pages in this section are coloured blue

"There is no one right way to learn about botanical art and illustration

Everybody is different.

Everybody has their own individual preferences for how they learn best.
  • some love face to face tuition and being in a group
  • some are "tech-happy" and like online videos / online tuition courses
  • some have challenges / problems travelling to tuition
  • others are content to read the best instruction books and work it out for themselves
  • a few like one-to-one mentoring and tuition.

“To be a botanical artist, one must have good eyesight, a steady hand and a curious mind.”
Wendy Walsh (1915-2015) - see 20th Century Artists
Teachers Apple by Augusta Withers (The Pomological Magazine)ure

The best way to make learning about botanical art productive for you is to:
  • FIRST learn the basics of how to draw and paint - and develop knowledge, skills and competence
  • NEXT apply those basics to learning about how to paint plants and flowers e.g. learn principles / elements / checklists of "what you need to know"
  • THEN practice - "doing" rather than looking or reading, . Nothing of merit is accomplished until you practice, practice, practice!
  • ASK for feedback from those who know what they're talking about
  • REPEAT principles of botanical art and illustration for
    • new subject matter and/or
    • using new media and/or
    • using new techniques
  • STUDY the botanical artwork of leading botanical artists and illustrators - both past and present i.e. go to exhibitions and art galleries - bearing in mind that
    • some of the best there is, is in the past
    • you can also study books about their work
  • KEEP LEARNING - the best botanical artists never stop learning how to become better!

DO YOU HAVE A QUERY? READ ON!

People who learn tend to be inquisitive and find out things for themselves.

If you have a query, BEFORE you ask your question, please make sure you review ALL the relevant information on this website.
I get a LOT of queries and I do NOT respond to queries that already have answers on this website.
  • This page lists all education information on this website
  • If you get no answer, check whether you missed the answer already given.
  • I do not respond to queries outside the scope of this website and/or where I have no information.
