Green Gold: Plants from the travels of John Jeffrey
Venue: Gateway Gallery, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh Dates: 27th April - 30th June 2019 Time: 10:00 - 17:45 Admission: FREE The exhibition is associated with the publication of a book "Unbound" celebrating the plant hunter John Jeffrey. As well as RBGE archive material, the exhibition includes six especially commissioned watercolour paintings by Nicola Macartney featuring trees and flowering plants collected by Jeffrey in North America. In 1849 an influential group of subscribers came together under the care of Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) to sponsor a plant-hunter, John Jeffrey, and support his ambitious expedition to North America in 1850. But after his mysterious disappearance, just four years later, he was soon all-but-forgotten. |
An international project to identify and record the Flora of Nepal has been ongoing for some years. Nepal is a globally important biodiversity hot-spot - with 75 vegetation types, 35 forest types and an estimated 7,000 vascular (flowering) plants. Plants are used by the Nepalese people for food, medicine, construction and fuel, and plants continue to sustain livelihoods. The exhibition in 2016-17 celebrated the bicentenary of relationships between Britain and Nepal, and highlights RBGE's work on the Flora of Nepal
