Profiles of Selected Artists for ASBA 23rd Annual International Exhibition

ASBA's 23rd Annual International Exhibition of Botanical Art at Wave Hill includes 13 artists who have never exhibited in an ABA International Exhibition before.

A total of 46 two-dimensional, original, botanical artworks - out of 178 entries have been selected. The international botanical artists come from the US (33), Australia (1), Canada (3), Germany (2),  Japan (2), Netherlands (1), Russia (2) and the UK (2).  Entries are down on last year - but this may be due to the Pandemic.

It's hoped that the exhibition can be held as planned in September.

Selected Artists

Botanical Artists whose botanical drawing, painting, print or illustration was selected for the exhibition are listed BELOW

I confess I gave myself a memory check and sorted them - from memory - before checking each individual artist's bio! I got 27 of the 46 sorted without the need for more information! 

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

• Seongweon Ahn (New Jersey) - member of both Member of ASBA(USA) & KBAC(Korea). She is a a Korean Botanical Artist currently living in New Jersey, USA. She majored in Oriental Painting for Undergraduate studies but now works mainly in coloured pencils. She has participated in multiple exhibitions in Korea and Taiwan and her previous awards include: Gold medal winner at Botanical Art Society of Korea Open exhibition 2019 and Prize winner at the 2019 International Botanical Art Show in Seoul. • Claudia Campazzo (California) - Born in Chile to an Italian family, she has lived all of her adult life in the United States. Currently lives in Fairfax, California. Lost her hearing in 2016 and began painting as a creative alternative to her career as a violist.
• Mary Crabtree (Colorado) - Born and raised in the US midwest. Currently living in Colorado. 30-year career as a research virologist with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Began studying botanical illustration after retirement at the Denver Botanic Gardens (School of Botanical Art and Illustration and at several international botanical art workshops.  Her work has been exhibited at the DBG and the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History. Additionally, her illustrations are in use in interpretive signs and publications by the Denver Mountain Parks Division, Denver, CO.  
• Jessica Daigle (Connecticut). An Illustrator and Designer who has also worked as a scientific illustrator. Started her own business in 2019 and uses a technique known as 'indirect' oil painting.

• Jean Emmons (Vashon Island, Washington) - an award winning botanical artist whose technique for watercolour painting on vellum is based on medieval manuscript illumination. Lives on Vashon Island, WA, USA. Her work is included in numerous collections including the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, the Royal Horticultural Society Lindley Library, and the Shirley Sherwood Collection. She has won many prestigious awards.
  
• Ingrid Finnan (New York) - Consistent exhibitor at this exhibition (9th through 23rd). Born in 1944 in Poland, now lives in Riverdale, New York City, Took up botanical art in 2005, after retiring from a career of 30 years working as a designer of decorative textiles. She admires the Dutch Golden Age floral painters and paints in oils (on gesso prepared 600 gsm Fabriano Artistico). Since 2006, she has shown annually in the International American Society of Botanical Artists Exhibitions and other exhibitions, including those associated with the Shirley Sherwood Collection at Kew. Recipient of the Horticultural Society of New York Best in Show Award, 2013
• Jane Fisher (Minnesota) - Studied botanical art at the Minnesota School of Botanical Art. Works in graphite.

• Pat Giancontieri (Long Island, New York) - Classically trained at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Worked as a Textile & Surface Designer. She practices Hand-Etching on Granite. Currently working towards a "Certificate in Botanical Illustration" from the New York Botanical Garden. (SEE ABOVE)
• Monika deVries Gohlke (Brooklyn) - a painter and printmaker working  primarily with botanical subjects. Has exhibited very widely and at prestigious venues and has work in private and public collections. Won the Helen Gray Garber Award at the 20th International. 
• Elaine Goldstone (California) - She has an AA in Fine Art, a BS in Graphic Design and spent most of her career in high tech marketing. She now teaches Pilates and paints flowers. Member of the Santa Clara Watercolor Society and the Northern California Society of Botanical Artists

• Gaye Grossman (New York) - Certificate with Honors in Botanical Illustration at the New York Botanical Garden in 2019. Started out as a painter with an emphasis on decoration for for homes and businesses in Manhattan, Long Island, Westchester and Connecticut. Started to study botanical art when she realised how much she enjoyed drawing plants (SEE ABOVE)
• Jane Hancock (Minneapolis) - a graduate of the College of Wooster and of Harvard University, where she earned a doctorate in art history. She lives in Minneapolis. her work is included in the Florilegium of the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden. She's previously participated in juried exhibitions  - including the 19th Annual International and the Annual Exhibition at Filoli, and many exhibitions of the Great River Chapter of the ASBA and the Minnesota School of Botanical Art.
• Wendy Hollender (New York State) - works in coloured pencils and is also a commercial illustrator and an instructor of Botanical Art and Illustration at the New York Botanical Garden and her studio.

• Patricia Luppino (New York) - born in Brooklyn, New York a lifelong resident of Long Island. Achieved a Diploma in Botanical Art with distinction from the SBA in 2008. Previously exhibited in the 13th, 15th, 17th, 19th, 20th and 21st Annual International Exhibitions in New York. (SEE ABOVE)
• Lucy Martin (Sonoma County, California) - She paints in paints in gouache and watercolor, with occasional use of colored pencil. and tends to focus on the overlooked (mushrooms, lichens etc). Recently she has been developing a suite of paintings associated with the plants left 'after the fire' which swept through the woodland near her home.

• Tammy McEntee - Born in New Jersey. Graduated with a degree in painting with a minor in art history from Montclair State College and a Certificate in Botanical Art and Illustration from the New York Botanical Garden. (SEE ABOVE)

• Inma Medina - Lives in the North East. Graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology with a BFA (1991). A fashion designer, who has worked in the fashion industry in New York and with top designers for more than 25 years. Started painting flowers with a view to developing a range of silk scarves. Member of the American Watercolor Society and the North East Watercolor Society  as well as ASBA. Loves nature and using the most transparent of pigments from Sennelier and Schmincke. (SEE ABOVE)
• Robin Moore (New York) - Graduated with a Certificate in Botanical Illustration from NYBG in 2015
• Terri Munroe (California) - a member of both the Southern and Northern Chapters of California. She completed her Botanical Art Certificate in 2017 at Filoli. She's exhibited at the Brody Botanical Center (Huntington Library), Los Angeles Arboretum, San Diego Botanical Gardens, Roger's Gardens, and the Alcatraz Florilegium.  Originally an oil artist, she now concentrates in watercolor, graphite, and pen and ink. â€‹   
• Sally Petru (Northern California) - Past President of ASBA and the founding President of the Northern California Society of Botanical Artists. Sally began the study of botanical illustration after a 10-year career in landscape architecture and 12 years into raising a family. She is a  graduate from the Botanical Art Certificate Program at Filoli in Woodside and has exhibited in numbers and various juried shows.
• Cristine Piane (Florida) - used to be a special occasion florist. Is self-taught and has been painting flowers for some years. She prefers to paint showy flowers, often grown in her own garden, although also obtained both potted and from the cut flower market. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, as well as many private collections.   She took a leave of absence from painting in 2003 to pursue another career as a trauma clinician.   She returned to painting in 2017.  
• Debra Pinciotti (Pennsylvania) - BA (Fine Art) from Kutztown University. Career as a jeweller. â€‹

• Jeanne Reiner | botanicgirl.com ( Connecticut) Previous career in product design and packaging. moved to Connecticut in 2002. Completed certificate in botanical art NYBG (2014). Co-founder of the Tri-State Botanical Artists of New York Botanical Garden
• Cynthia Rice - Loved gardens as a child, at college she became a gardener, propagator and student of botany. Subsequently became an urban designer and then a professional landscape architect. Took up botanical painting in 2004 and has served as a Director and Treasurer of ASBA
• Betsy Rogers-Knox (Connecticut) - Completed the Certificate in Botanical Illustration at NYBG in 2006 and has been illustrating plants ever since. Focuses on the life cycle and  usually observes the plant for a full year before beginning a composition. Teaches drawing and watercolor. Won Judges Prize at RHS Botanical Art Show in 2019.
• Olga Ryabtsova (California) - New up in Russia and now lives in California. Masters Degree in graphic design and illustration from the Moscow University of Graphic Arts. She has worked for international advertising agencies, as a photojournalist and a commercial photographer. Paints on vellum and draws in silverpoint and teaches both techniques. Exhibition Chair at Botanical Artist Guild of Southern California. Her Roxburgh Fig was included in 'Out of the Woods' and her work was included in the 20th International.
• Connie Scanlon (Saint Paul, Minnesota) - finds her attention to detail and skills in critical skills of observation as an intensive care nurse of particular relevance to botanical art - of painting in watercolour on vellum. Her work has been included in the 16th International Exhibition at the Hunt Institute (2019), the 17th-21st Annual International Juried American Society of Botanical Art Exhibitions. She was awarded an RHS Silver Grenfell Medal for her series of paintings, Preludes and Postludes on a Stem (2013)

• Meryl Sheetz (Connecticut) - Studied botanical art with Margaret Best and on the Certificate Court at NYBG - graduating in 2019.  Her selected artwork is a graphite drawing of a teasel.

• Kathy Schermer-Gramm - Living and teaches in North Carolina with a focus on edibles,  NC natives, and decaying plant material using watercolor, ink wash, or graphite to create highly detailed images on paper. Her artwork is called Fading Cranefly Orchid's Last Dance (SEE ABOVE)
• Keiko Nibu Tarver (Philadelphia) - Originally from Fukuoka in Japan. Attended Powel House Botanical Art Classes on Philadelphia
• Susan Tomlinson (Lubbock, Texas) - a botanical artist, writer, and teacher. BFA in Studio Art; MS and Ph.D. in Geology. Associate Professor in the Honors College at Texas Tech University. Member of the Texas Tech University Teaching Academy. Her book is called How to Keep a Naturalist's Notebook . Also provided excellent advice which led to my blog post about eyesight issues and optics  for botanical artists - see Prescribing eyeglasses for botanical art
• Yuan Yuan Wang (New York)
• Carol Woodin (Hudson Valley. New York) - Director of Exhibitions for ASBA and professional botanical artist. Specialises in painting rare plants in watercolour on vellum focusing on orchids; her work is published in a number of botanical publications . She has been awarded an RHS Gold Medal and the Diane Bouchier Award. ASBA Exhibitions Director.

AUSTRALIA

• John Pastoriza Pinol (Melbourne). - completed his 'docturmiento' in Botany at University of Vigo, Galicia, in Spain. Studied botanical illustration with Jenny Phillips in Melbourne. Won a Gold Medal at RHS 200 for 'Paphiopediulm and Dracula orchids in watercolour'. Contributed to both the Highgrove and Transylvania Florilegium. He has work in the collections RBG Kew Library, The Highgrove Florilegium, The Transylvania Florilegium, Hunt Institute, Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney, Geelong Botanic Gardens Victoria, Art Gallery of Ballarat, RMIT University Melbourne and Collection of Alisa and Isaac M. Sutton.  Exhibits frequently and internationally including at the 12th International at the Hunt. Awarded the ASBA Diane Bouchier Award for Excellence as well as other prizes. Teaches botanical Art at the Geelong Botanic Gardens (14+ years). Member of BAS, ASBA and RBGS Florilegium Society.

CANADA

• Charity Dakin - Born on Canada's west coast, her home is now  located in the northern boreal region of Canada. NO formal art education. She's recently begun to explore the traditions of botanical art and illustration.
• Heather Gross (Cayuga, Ontario) - Started studying botanical art with Margaret Best at the Dundas Valley School of Art in January 2017.  Her backyard of Carolinian Forest provides inspiration. Her painting of the Kentucky Coffee tree (Gymnocladus dioicus) was used for the poster for the Art of the Plant (Botanical Art Worldwide in Canada) exhibition in 2019.
• Sengmany Phommachakr - Born in Vientiane Laos. Emigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1980 and now lives in Ottawa. Masters Degree in Plant Science from McGill University. Studied botanical art with and mentored by Margaret Best after a 'turning point' workshop with her in 2016. Had two paintings in the Canadian exhibition for the Art of the Plant Exhibition for the Canadian contribution to Botanical Art Worldwide Day.

GERMANY

• Andreas Hentrich (Cologne) - born in Wuppertal, Germany and lives and works in Cologne. Trained as a restoration technician and now works as an artist and curates exhibitions. Has exhibited widely in Germany. He also regularly organizes international exhibitions, mostly in exchange with Japanese artists and institutions. Has work in the Hunt and Cologne Municipal Museum.
• Verena Redmann (North Rhine-Westphalia) - Draws in coloured pencil and exhibits with Die Galerie Forum Botanische Kunst in Thüngersheim. Her work has been in ASBA exhibitions in California, Arizona and New York.

JAPAN

• Asuka Hishiki (Hyogo) - Consistent exhibitor at this exhibition (12th - 23rd). b. 1972 in Kyoto. Lived for 10 years in New York. Graduated with Masters Degree in Fine arts from Kyoto City University of Arts. Exhibited at the Hunt 14th International Exhibition (2013) . She won a Gold Medal at the New York Botanical Garden Triennial in 2014 and a number of other awards. Her work is in the collections of the Hunt Institute, New York Museum and Shirley Sherwood.
• Kiyomi Yamamoto (Toyama City) - a member of the Botanical Art Group in the Botanical Garden of Toyama (BGT)

NETHERLANDS

• Esmee Winkel - Grew up on Curacao and then moved to Leiden to study. She has two degrees - Master Scientific Illustration, Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design and Maastricht University and Biology BSc, Leiden University. She's a professional Scientific illustrator and Botanical artist for the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden and at the Hortus Botanicus, Leiden in the Netherlands - using pen and ink, watercolour,  pencil and digital drawing programs. Her work is world-class and has been recognised in a number of prizes and awards - including two RHS Gold Medals and the the Jill Smythies Award for excellence in botanical illustration by the Linnean Society. Currently writing a book on botanical illustration techniques.

RUSSIA

• ​Olga Gudzera (Moscow) - a retired engineer who is a self-taught botanical artist. She's previously participated in exhibitions in Russia, USA, Spain, Germany. Previously exhibited in the 21st International exhibition. (SEE ABOVE)
• Natalia Zueva​ (Saint-Petersburg) - Taught by Alexander Viazmensky. Studied academic drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts in Saint-Petersburg. Has participated in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd St. Petersburg Exhibitions of Botanical art

UNITED KINGDOM

• Lizzie Sanders (Edinburgh, Scotland) - Has produced botanical paintings for over 30 years.  Won three RHS Gold Medals. Awarded the Diane Bouchier Award for Excellence in 2004. Trained at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee. Lectured in Graphic Design at Dundee, Glasgow and Edinburgh Art Colleges. Currently tutors the Diploma Course in Botanical Illustration at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh.
  
• ​Liz Shippam (West Sussex, UK) - Consistent Exhibitor - She has had work selected for the ASBA Annual International Exhibition in New York every year since joining. She paints like a miniaturist using watercolour with tiny brushes. Her preferred subject matter is fruit and she excels in her portrayal of the skin of soft fruit. Her painting of Prunus insititia 'Merryweather Damson' was chosen for the cover of the catalogue for the  20th International Exhibition of Botanical Art. Exhibits in London, New York and Sussex.

JUDGES

The Judges making the selection were:

• Frank Almeda, Curator of Botany Emeritus, Institute for Biodiversity Science and Sustainability, California Academy of Sciences
• Karen Kluglein - Botanical artist and botanical art teacher
• Eileen Jeng Lynch, Curator of Visual Arts, Wave Hill

EXHIBITION

ASBA and Wave Hill are currently hopeful about actually being able to hang the 23rd International Annual Exhibition at Wave Hill. However they are putting safety first and are currently looking into contingency planning and programming. 

If it goes ahead,

• the exhibition will be at Wave Hill, 675 West 252nd Street, Bronx, NY  
• A catalog will be published
• Artists’ Stories Behind the Art are currently being compiled for the  ASBA website.
