Reecent events have highlighted Richard III's (1452-1485) association with Leicester and have inspired the subject matter for "A Medieval Cornucopia" - the latest exhibition of the The Leicestershire Society of Botanical Illustrators.
The theme of the exhibition concerns the culinary plants that would have been available to the Royal Plantagenet household and the aristocracy. Those with wealth and influence imported some highly prized and unusual spices and fruits at great expense in order to impress their guests and display their prosperity at vast banquets that incorporated national and international foods. The paintings in the exhibition depict fruit, vegetables, nuts, fungi and herbs and spices. A lot of the food that was eaten in medieval times is very familiar to us now. When: 25th September - 6th October 2015. Open 11.00 - 4.30 daily. Where: Leicester's Guildhall - some parts of the building pre-date Richard III and date back to the 14th Century. Admission: FREE Note: 1) The Leicestershire Society of Botanical Illustrators was created in 1987. The Society's President is Anne Marie Evans. The Society now numbers c.70 members - many of whom paint together each week at the Holbrook Road Memorial Hall, Leicester. 2) Richard III died at the Battle of Bosworth, near Leicester. His body was found in 2012 buried underneath a Leicester car park. It was reinterred in Leicester Cathedral in March 2015 Website: http://www.lsbi.org.uk Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Leicestershire-Society-of-Botanical-Illustrators-1614187425506338/timeline
