The first major exhibition of the Scottish Society of Botanical Artists (SSBA) is titled "Enchanted Forrest". It will focus on the plants brought back to Scotland by Falkirk-born plant hunter George Forrest, who was known as the "Indiana Jones of the plant world". Venue: Park Gallery, Callendar House, Falkirk FK1 1 YR. Dates: Monday 12th September - Sunday 16th October 2016 Opening hours: 10am - 5pm daily apart from Tuesdays The Scottish Society of Botanical Artists (SSBA) is a relatively new art society. It was formed in 2014 by a group of botanical artists based in Scotland, who were keen to provide a forum in Scotland for meeting with like minded artists, exhibiting their work, and promoting botanical art as a genre. About George Forrest
About Callendar HouseThe grounds of Callendar House are called Callendar Park and cover 170 acres and are included in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland, the national listing of significant gardens. In the 1970s the arboretum was planted with the descendants of the original specimens collected in Yunnan Province by George Forrest, over 100 years ago. There was much new planting here in the 1970s, including native and exotic species, in the form of the George Forrest Collection. Some of 40 plants listed include Rhododendron (Rhododendron trichostomum, Rhododendron decorum), maple (Acer forrestii), Pieris (Pieris forrestii 'Wakehurst'), Fragrant olive (Osmanthus yunnanensis), Butterfly bush (Buddleia fallowiana), and Daphne (Daphne odora). About Yunnan ProvenceThe Royal Botanical Garden Edinburgh, in conjunction with Kumming Institute of Botany, China, has established a botanical garden in Yunnan Provence, the Lijiang Alpine Garden, as well as the Jade Dragon research station, Britain's first joint scientific laboratory with China.
The Botanical Images Scotia (BISCOT) Exhibition for 2016 reopened today at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, John Hope Gateway Building. Below you can see some photos of the exhibit. However the first photo is of Hazel Morris with Sarah Roberts who won a Gold Medal for "Six plants that nodulate with nitrogen-fixing bacteria". You can see some of the paintings in her exhibit in the background. Hazel Morris is the Chairperson of the Scottish Society of Botanical Artists and much involved with the organisation of BISCOT and its exhibition at both Gardening Scotland and the RGBE The exhibition closes finally on Thursday 23 June so lots of time to get to see it! Please note that although work may be for sale once hung, no work may be removed or substituted before the end of the exhibition. My blog post at the weekend - Botanical Images Scotia (BISCOT) 2016 - Medal Winners - gave details of the medal winners. The following points are considered by the BISCOT judges when assessing artwork for medals
My thanks to Jacqui Pestell, Director Botanical Illustration at RGBE for the photographs
In this post you will see:
If you missed the show don't worry - the show reopens at RGBE on Wednesday (details at the end of this post) Gold Medals
This is a the second Gold Medal this year for Sansanee! She also won Gold at the RHS Botanical Art Show in London in February 2016. Unfortunately Sansanee is in Thailand at the moment and was unable to attend the exhibition and her work was hung by her partner who lives in Lothian. Sarah Roberts has been working on a project she is very committed to but hopefully will be visiting the showground later today and will find out she has won a Gold Medal! Silver Gilt Medals
Morna is a graduate of the Diploma Course in Botanical Illustration run by the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh. Margaret Walty won a Gold Medal at the January 2007 RHS Show and a Silver Gilt Medal at the RHS Botanical Art Show in 2015. Silver Medal
Bronze Medals
Commended
Jeffrey is an ex-student of the RBGE Diploma in Botanical Illustration and also won a Bronze Medal in 2015. BISCOT 2016 now moves to the RGBE This exhibition now transfers to the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, John Hope Gateway Building where it will reopen on 8th June. It will then remain on display until 24th June.
So lots of time still to see these exhibits - and buy some artwork! A reminder of the Call for Entries for BISCOT 2016 - The Botanical Images Scotia Exhibition - and the deadline for entries. The BISCOT 2016 Exhibition |
Available Awards Particular credit is given to themed work which attracts a higher award. Available awards include Gold, Silver-gilt, Silver and Bronze certificates. These take the form of embossed presentation cards. The Mary Mendum Medal may be awarded to an exhibit of exceptional quality. There are no monetary awards. |
....the Fortingall Yew is a male tree. Yews are normally either male or female and in autumn and winter sexing yews is generally easy. Males have small spherical structures that release clouds of pollen when they mature. Females hold bright red berries from autumn into winter. It was, therefore, quite a surprise to me to find a group of three ripe red berries on the Fortingal yew this October when the rest of the tree was clearly male.
