The NEW Association of `British Botanical Artists (ABBA) today announced its Call for Entries for the UK contribution to the Worldwide Botanical Art Exhibition in 2o18.
In Ruskin's footsteps - "Linking people to plants through botanical art"
The exhibition is OPEN to:
Eligibility: Artists can enter one country’s exhibition, and that is the country of the artist’s primary residence. If an artist’s country of residence is not holding a worldwide exhibition, and the artist has some connection with the UK, the UK can invite the artist to submit an entry to the British exhibition.
The Call for Entries provides all the details that artists need to know at this stage.
Here's the basics of what's required
All entries will be juried by a prestigious team of professional artists, scientists and curators (to be announced at a later date). The paintings will be assessed according to:
In terms of dates there is no time to lose! If interested please note the following dates for the two stage application/submission process
I'm just really pleased to see this exhibition get off the ground. I was involved in getting it started in the Autumn and wrote a very long brief for what needed to be done - which was an awful lot!
Many congratulations are due to all those involved in making the exhibition real and finding a venue (which is really not easy in May!) I know for a fact that there must have been an awful lot of work involved to get this far.
The Margaret Flockton Award is for Excellence in Contemporary Scientific Botanical Illustration - and entries for the 2017 Award open and close very soon.
Some consider it the premier award for strict botanical illustration for reproduction in scientific journals. A lot of the people who enter are professional botanical illustrators working for or with botanical gardens all over the world.
It's also a valuable Award given that
Illustrators from around the world submit scientifically accurate drawings that accompany the published taxonomic description of the plant, clearly highlighting all of the distinctive features of the species. Original taxonomic illustrations are highly detailed black and white drawings primarily undertaken in pen and ink, pencil or digitally rendered.
Call for Entries: Margaret Flockton Award 2017
Entries for The Margaret Flockton Award 2017 have to be submitted between 1 Feb and 28 Feb 2017.
Works must have been produced after February 2015 - but there has been an important change for the 2017 Award.....
Changes to note: 2017 Margaret Flockton Award and Exhibition
The Award is
Works selected for exhibition will be on display later this year in May at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney.
Hopefully the move to digital entries will mean that we might also see the exhibition travelling to other parts of the world where entries can be printed and mounted or framed for exhibition.
I know I'd love to see the Margaret Flockton Award exhibition either at the RHS Botanical Art Show or at the Shirley Sherwood Gallery!

How to apply for exhibition space
You can download the application form (pdf file) for space at Botanical Scotia 2017 below. If you print it off you can then handwrite your entry.
All applications for entry need to be received by 14 February 2017.
I'm going to have a word with the organisers and will suggest that they do two things:
In the meantime please note that you will need to post both form - completed in handwriting - and a cheque for the fee.
Further Information: Including more details which need to be observed by those applying for space to exhibit can be found on the BISCOT website - see BISCOT - Botanical illustration International competition | Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society

Here's a summary of the Call for Entries:
Who can enter?
In the Botanical Art category, the judging panel will look for three-dimensional drawings of appropriate subject matter where colour, tone and composition result in a pleasing and balanced portrait. Most important are botanical accuracy and the application of technique. Presentation and labelling are also considered.
How many works can be entered?
Has anybody tried using this form?
I'm curious about the entry form. It's not generally possible to enter data into a pdf form - I tried by downloading the form and then tried to complete it. I would normally expect the submission form to be:
Note: I'll be sending a link to this blog post to the entries email address.
