In 2025, a second worldwide collaboration links people to plants
through contemporary botanical art

Botanical Art Worldwide 2025:
The official website

Botanical Art Worldwide is an initiative of the American Society of Botanical Artists.
  • This is the official Botanical Art Worldwide website
  • Each country also has its own page (see the menu at the top for the listings of the various country pages)
  • It also has a news page.

Where does this information come from?
A lot of the information on this page was summarised from information
  • provided by the steering committee members for each country participating in Botanical Art Worldwide project;
  • aggregated by the American Society of Botanical Artists for the purpose of publishing on the various official sites (as indicated above)
However, a significant amount of additional information was also found on numerous sites and social media belonging to participating entities in the different countries.

Scope and Purpose of the World Exhibition of Botanical Art

Eligible plants

Exhibitions will be themed on plants indigenous to each country to:
  • focus on worldwide plant diversity in the crops that have been closely associated with the human species over thousands of years.
  • highlight the world’s floristic regions and the vast variety of food and useful plants available, in contrast with the relatively few varieties currently used in mass cultivation.
Plants eligible for inclusion are those cultivated for food, textiles, building, energy, and medicine.

The 2025 project encourages a focus on
  • HERITAGE CROPS: Crops that are not used in modern, large scale monocultural agriculture. Crops chosen should have been in cultivation for a minimum of 50 years.
  • CROP WILD RELATIVES: Wild species that can be hybridized with cultivated crops to impart a new characteristic to the cultivated crop, or that are foraged wild plants.
  • ANCIENT CROPS: Those that have been cultivated for hundreds or thousands of years in the same form.
The definition of native plant is:
"Any wild plant indigenous to a country, including natural hybrids, but excluding any cultivar, man-made hybrids, and naturalized exotics.”

Exhibitions

Each country has interpreted the overall theme and set its own opening and closing dates - and title for its exhibition.

Artworks in the various exhibitions will comprise:
  • Original botanical artworks juried from submissions of artists residing in each participating country. These will ONLY depict native plants (i.e. indigenous to that country)
  • A digital compilation of a selection of images from ALL exhibitions worldwide will be shown continuously at each participating venue, alongside that country’s original artworks.

Project Goals

  • To present a cohesive message about the ability to link the world’s people with plants through botanical art.
  • To build partnerships and educate the global community about the worldwide renaissance in botanical art.
  • To increase appreciation and understanding of the world’s precious plant diversity and its interconnectedness.
  • To acknowledge and build upon the increasing connections between artists worldwide.
  • To engage in a project to document the some of wild plant species of the world.

Organisation and management

This exhibition was initiated by the American Society of Botanical Artists and was first held in 2018.

In 2025, each country's exhibition is
  • managed by a Steering Committee comprising members from each participating country (explained on the 'About' page of the dedicated website)
  • supported by appropriate botanists and agricultural scientists

https://www.botanicalartworldwide.info/ provides a summary details of participating countries.

A Worldwide Day of Botanical Art

A Worldwide Day of Botanical Art was held on Sunday 18th May 2025
Special events around the world were held throughout the day - and around the world.

Worldwide Botanical Art Exhibition Outline
NEW COUNTRIES It should be noted that some exhibitions are related to countries which are
  • very new to this initiative and
  • do not conform to the model of "this is how we do it".
  • What matters is whether they focus on portraying plants (in this instance crops) and the diversity of native plants in that country.

Philippines (NEW)

The word ani, meaning “harvest”, holds a deep meaning to the cultural and natural heritage of the Filipino people. Located in Southeast Asia, the Philippines is one of the magadiverse countries in the world boasting an incredible diversity of plant resources. It is home to more than 10,000 species of vascular plants, half of which are found nowhere else on the planet. While many of the plants used in modern day agriculture in the country were introduced during the global trade in the Pacific, the vast majority of their native wild relatives are still underutilized and often overlooked despite their numerous potential in our food security and their hidden economic value.
Exhibition: Ani: Our Assets, Natural Heritage, and Cultural Identity
Venue: Gallery 12, National Museum of Natural History, Teodoro F. Valencia Cir, Ermita, Manila, 1000 Metro Manila
Dates: May 16, 2025 - May 18, 2026

Each piece has been carefully selected by a panel of expert botanists and botanical artists based on scientific accuracy, artistic merit, technical mastery, and overall impact.
Many of these plants hold deep personal meaning for the artists, evoking memories of home, family traditions, and cultural heritage. Some recall the familiar ingredients used in home cooking, while others are tied to crops central to traditional festivities.
Beyond their personal significance, these plants are valued for their roles in food, medicine, and textiles, representing a rich genetic diversity often overlooked in modern agriculture. By showcasing these lesser-known varieties, this exhibition underscores the importance of preserving plant biodiversity while celebrating the artistry of botanical illustration.

Turkey (NEW)

Situated at the intersection of two continents, Türkiye is home to three distinct phytogeographical regions, each contributing to its exceptional floral diversity. The country’s unique geological features, diverse soil types, and varying climates create an environment where wild and cultivated plant species thrive side by side. This ecological and agricultural diversity, shaped by thousands of years of human interaction, makes Türkiye a living laboratory for understanding plant adaptation, resilience, and the importance of biodiversity in modern times.

Members of the Dutch Association of Botanical Artists exhibit original drawings and watercolors of paint and fiber plants in Hortus van Fryslân De Kruidhof.
The works were made especially for this occasion and show paint and fibre plants that can grow in the open ground in the Netherlands. These can be both wild and cultivated plants. The chosen plants were used for this purpose before 1950 and often for centuries.

Anyone who walks into the garden of De Kruidhof after viewing the works can also see a large number of species alive: there is a border with paint plants provided with name tags.
On the 18th May 2025  The Day of Color was held at the venue.

The Association of Botanical Artists Netherlands organized a small-scale market at De Kruidhof. This day is all about dye plants. There are demonstrations, live sketches and plenty of inspiration around natural dyes.

NOTE: I must confess this looks remarkably like an enterprising teacher has got her ongoing project on to the list and uses images from the students for her masterclasses to produce images for the exhibition - except we get several different takes on the same plant - as happens in classes! The submission form makes it very clear that works exhibited at conditional on signing up to the masterclass.

I can see very little in this cuntry's approach that reflects the overall intention and the approaches of other countries in relation to the theme of this particular year i.e. crop diversity and the need to focus on heritage crops, crop wild relatives and ancient crops.

Canada is a HUGE country - the second largest in the world - and this time around they have opted for a virtual exhibition which I suspect works very well for them - as the map below indicates - given where the artists live!
Canada is the second-largest country in the world and ranges from coastal rainforest to grasslands to savannah forests and alpine tundra. Canadians rely on the abundance of the land for our harvests as well as subsistence and we are working to safeguard the genetic diversity of our crops and crop-wild relatives for future generations.

.....the exhibition will take viewers through a series of works dedicated to the triad that forms the foundation of the milpa: corn, squash, and beans. It will also feature a series of plants or quelites that also grow in this agrosystem and, finally, works that depict other plants, trees, and shrubs that, while not part of the traditional milpa, have grown alongside it and provided seeds, fruits, and roots. Furthermore, the exhibition showcases the milpa, without the technical and scientific rigor of botanical art, through the imagination and inspiration it has awakened in the participating visual artists.
Crop diversity versus agricultural homogenization in the sample: the milpa. Ancestral plants of Mexico
The most advanced participants of the Colectivo CICYNM in the botanical art courses, professionals and guest artists, will show the diversity of crops in the Mexican "milpa" using a variety of artistic techniques such as graphite, watercolor, acrylic, ink and others.

Colombia

As stated by the Institute of Environmental Studies (IDEAM in spanish) Colombia ranks among the countries with the highest biodiversity on the planet. Over recent decades, significant efforts have been dedicated to updating and studying the inventory of the rich biological wealth that exists within our borders. As a result, Colombia has become a primary reference for plant diversity....
The exhibition "Colombia: Plants, Flavors, and Traditions" seeks to emphasize the importance of Colombia’s botanical diversity and the traditional knowledge associated with it, while promoting the conservation and sustainable use of our plant life."

Bermuda and Costa Rica have not participated in the second Botanical Art Worldwide.

What is an eligible artist?
A commentary at the outset of this project

This is a comment which I wrote at the outset of the project prior to Botanical Art Worldwide 2018. It's still relevant to any countries thinking about participating in future. It's very clear from some of the new entries to Botanical At Worldwide 2025 that an open call is an open call - and you might, in some countries, find artists outside the country who portray plants from the country in question.

I note that any reference to members in good standing has disappeared from the scope for participants in the project - so I think this comment might have helped see issues from a different perspective. I repeat it here for posterity and to prevent any future silliness!

Some of the definitions seem to limit the eligibility of artists to those in good standing with organisations participating in the organisation of the exhibition.

So far as I am aware (and I may be wrong) there was never any intention to limit participation to those botanical artists who belonged to particular organisations of botanical artists. The outline for the exhibition described the only qualification for an artist is that they reside in the country they exhibit with. There is no mention of needing to be a member of a botanical art society.

Limiting eligible artists to those who are "members in good standing" of named botanical art societies means that
  • excellent botanical artists who choose NOT to belong to a 'named' botanical art society - for various and very good reasons - will be ineligible for entry.
  • This means we won't get to see the best that botanical artists around the world have to offer - and I think that's really very sad for an initiative of this sort.
  • From a personal perspective the exhibition is celebrating botanical art NOT botanical art organisations! Hence selection for the exhibition should be based purely on the merit of the painting and its relevance to the theme - and NOT on whether you belong to a particular organisation!
However there's still time for those organising exhibitions in countries involved to have a rethink and some of them have - and have revised their call for entries as a result!

My view - by all means charge non-members an entry fee in excess of that charged to members - but please don't exclude excellent botanical artists who are do not choose to be "society people".
